| Introduction |
|
Welcome to the first
edition of the Social Librarian....an e-zine dedicated to sharing
the philosophy
of social marketing with librarians everywhere.
We intend to publish
every two weeks with articles, letters, case studies (or "stories")
about social marketing in a way that will help you all be more
effective librarians.
We hope this e-zine will be a
two way street. Let us know what you think of what we are presenting
and
we’ll respond. Send your comments to bschroer@socialmarketing.org.
And Enjoy!

When it
comes to customer service, librarians are caught in a paradox that
may drive patron
expectations beyond what can be fulfilled. More and more, library
directors request customer service training even as surveys reveal
high levels of patron satisfaction. In one survey I conducted,
library staff were ranked close to excellent on their responses,
knowledge
of materials, friendliness, and more. So, why is there so much
drive to keep besting customer service standards? Click

1 in 8 Americans
is 65 or older. By 2020 that ratio will be reduced to 1 in 6. Yet
seniors are disproportionally
not using their community libraries.
More and more surveys are now
reporting seniors are non-users or are using libraries the “same
or less often” than they were 5 years ago.
