Greetings!

Why do I need to greet patrons? This seems artificial and a waste of my time. In any society, some rules for engaging people may seem trivial, but actually serve an important purpose. Shaking hands or holding up your hand in a sign of greeting stems from an ancient tradition of demonstrating to those you do not know that you have no weapon and mean no ill will. Greeting patrons is a more elevated symbol that lets patrons know they are welcome in your library. You are the one that is on their home turf, therefore it is your responsibility to initiate the greeting. Certainly, greetings that are only half meant, said without enthusiasm or done for the sake of filling a requirement don’t satisfy the purpose. Genuinely offered greetings contribute to a culture of friendliness and valuing of the customer. Just as when someone enters your home, you offer a greeting, so to is a greeting welcomed by your patrons when they enter your Library. Given a pleasant and genuine greeting, many patrons brighten and enjoy their visit more fully. A great value at a small price.... |
